INTENTIONAL BY DESIGN
The world doesn’t need more clothes — it needs better clothes. We conceive our textiles at the source on our own looms in Benares and Bengal, woven by master weavers we’ve worked with since the beginning of our journey. Each garment is produced by hand in small batches at our atelier in Bombay.
Limited in quantity and never on sale, each piece is made with care – to last and to be lived in. At PAYAL KHANDWALA, art is our lens and fashion is our medium.
“What sets us apart is my perspective as an artist: a preoccupation with the formal elements of fine art, reinterpreted as style and comfort for real women. Each piece is created for the modern aesthete — bohemian yet chic — with an emphasis on good taste and quiet sophistication.” - Payal
MARRYING HERITAGE + MODERNITY
Our heritage category honours artisanal textiles — handwoven silks, cottons and brocades — reimagined in modern shapes that keep tradition alive.
Our contemporary line carries our core value of considered craftsmanship, articulated into pared-back silhouettes that are precise yet effortless.
To honour our textile crafts, we operate our very own handlooms, with skilled craftspeople at the helm, creating our unique silks, brocades, linens and cottons that are loved for their quality, versatility and lightness.

KNOW MORE ABOUT US
Born in 1974 in Bombay, Payal Khandwala grew up surrounded by art and design through her mother and grandmother, both painters and dressmakers. She studied fashion design in Bombay, before moving to New York City on a scholarship to the Parsons School of Design, where she graduated with honours in Fine Arts and Illustration in 1999.
In 2012 she launched her eponymous label, bringing together her dual vocations as painter and clothesmaker.
Payal’s design sensibility sits at the crossroads of art, fashion and architecture, defined by a house signature of bold simplicity, impeccable proportions, and the richness of handwoven textiles. Guided by the philosophy that clothes should feel good, her aesthetic combines timeless style with effortless luxury for the modern woman.
As an artist, her paintings have been represented by galleries in New York, Barcelona, and Bombay, and are part of private collections worldwide. Her clothes are worn by women all over the world.
Payal lives in Bombay with her family.
